The world used to love a smoker: James Dean, Frank Sinatra… But those guys are long gone and so is the notion that smoking is ‘cool’. Just like movies of teenage angst and swing music, smoking has gone well and truly out of style…
Yes, there’s still a few smokers lingering about – much like that tobacco smell you just can’t get out of your curtains – but for the most part, people are moving on to the cleaner, healthier, cheaper and all round superior e-cigs.
Here are 8 smoker’s realities that will make new age vapers feel as smug as a Cheshire cat who got the cream…
Cough
Your hacking cough is more than likely down to your nicotine habit – since you’re inhaling over 7,000 chemicals, 69 of which are linked to cause cancer. Not only that, these chemicals contribute to lung cancer; 90 % of deaths from lung cancer are due to smoking.
Age Prematurely
Smoking has long been associated with premature aging. Wrinkly lips, puffy eyes and limp, lank hair are all tell-tale signs that you’re partial to a cig or two. And now there’s actually scientific proof; The Department of Plastic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University recently did a study involving sets of twins. The smoking twin showed visible evidence of aging signs, including baggy eyes, wrinkles around the lips and jowls, but these weren’t as prevalent in their non-smoking sibling.
Feel like a Social Outcast
Restaurants, pubs, bars, offices – wherever you are, you can’t escape the smoking ban. Vaping, however, is very much allowed. Every smoker has experienced FOMO when out with friends and having to leave mid conversation to go outside because you’re gasping for a cigarette. Not only do you miss out on large sections of the fun, but you’ll probably come back smelling less than pleasant; be prepared for scathing looks…
Reek like an Ashtray
Unlike a sweet and fruity vape pen, cigarettes smell foul – we hate to break it to you, but as a smoker, chances are you smell foul too. Smokers’ clothes and hair hold onto smoke for prolonged periods of time, meaning even a very light smoker is likely to carry the stench. Moreover, smoking leaves smoke particles behind in the throat and lungs, and these particles linger inside creating a literally toxic concoction and extremely nasty smelling breath. Yuck.
Huffing and Puffing
Smokers are more often than not in seriously bad shape. So much so, that simple activities like running for the bus, walking up stairs or pushing a pram become mammoth tasks. Smoking damages your body’s ability to absorb oxygen. Oxygen, as we all know, is crucial for the wellbeing of all cells of the body. Muscles do not function as well with compromised levels of oxygen, as is the case with every cell in the body. This doesn’t mean a smoker can’t exercise, but a smoker’s fitness will never be on a par with a non-smoker’s.
Not Having Sex
This one’s for you boys… If you’re middle aged and you’re smoking, you’re subjecting your body to some serious libido killing. Moreover, smoking has been proven to cause damage to the smooth muscle that assists with erectile functioning. Simply put – many of you will be hard pressed to ‘get it up’ more than a few times a month…
Expensive Poison
Everyone has their own vices, or ‘poison’ if you will – but this one is by far the most expensive choice. Even if you smoke one pack a day, that’s on average £10 daily, £70 weekly, £280 monthly and a staggering £3360 every year (you could get 7 iPhone 6’s for that).
Promoting Your Own Career Failure
Did you know that smoking breaks cost companies a whopping 5 billion pounds a year?! It’s no wonder then, that companies are rumoured to be considering filtering out smokers in job applications in the coming years.
